Our Wines
The wines of Montfaucon offer a wide range of profiles reflecting the diversity of grape varieties, terroirs and the estate’s plot-by-plot approach.
BARON DE MONTFAUCON
Made from the Viognier grape variety, we take special care to harvest this grape at optimal ripeness to preserve fresh, not overly warm aromas. The vines are planted in sandy-loam soils near the Rhône River. The nose expresses aromas of acacia blossom, citrus, and apricot, while the palate blends peach and exotic fruits, leading to a lively, lemony finish.
BARON DE MONTFAUCON
This white Côtes-du-Rhône is made predominantly from Clairette, complemented by Grenache Blanc. The vines are planted on clay-sandy soils with limestone scree. The wine is aged for nine months on its fine lees in vats. It stands out for its minerality and aromatic intensity, offering notes of verbena, lime, white peach, and a saline finish underpinned by fine bitters.
Château de Montfaucon, “Comtesse Madeleine”
This is the estate’s signature white wine; it combines complexity, volume, and freshness on our Lirac terroirs. Born from soils composed of sand and limestone, this wine is a blend of 40% Marsanne, 35% Clairette, 20% Grenache Blanc, and 5% Picpoul. It is aged for nine months on its lees in Burgundian barrels. It unveils aromas of white flowers, pear, and peach. The palate is deep and structured (séveuse), expressing the minerality and beautiful salinity of limestone terroirs.
Château de Montfaucon, “Vin de madame”
This wine comes from a unique parcel selection of old vines over 150 years old. Overlooking the Rhône, this parcel extends across a Villafranchian terrace with a highly sandy subsoil. It is predominantly composed of Clairette, interplanted with other varieties. The wine is fermented and then aged for nine months on its lees in Burgundian barrels. It reveals aromas of anise, fennel, and macadamia nut, with a broad texture, remarkable freshness, and a long, saline, almost iodized finish.
Château de Montfaucon
A blend of Grenache (50%), Cinsault (20%), Carignan (20%), and Counoise (10%), this gastronomic rosé reveals all the finesse of Lirac’s sandy and limestone terroirs. This maceration rosé undergoes a slow fermentation and is aged for six months in demi-muids from artisanal cooperages (Rousseau and Stockinger). Crafted in the spirit of a light red, it evokes wild strawberry, flowers, and spices with a certain generosity. This is confirmed on the palate with savory red fruit and an aromatic complexity carried by fine bitters that give tension to the wine.
Baron de Montfaucon, “Le Petit Baron”
A convivial and generous wine, Le Petit Baron reflects the fruity brilliance of a blend of Grenache, Carignan, Counoise, and Cinsault. From vines on the banks of the Rhône, it is vinified with a short maceration and aged in concrete tanks. The intense nose blends red fruits and spices, while the palate is supple and crunchy.
Baron de Montfaucon
An expression of galets roulés terroirs, this Côtes-du-Rhône combines pure drinking pleasure (gourmandise) and freshness. A blend of Grenache (60%), Syrah (20%), and Carignan (20%), it is de-stemmed, fermented for 10 to 12 days, and then aged for 18 months in vats. The nose mingles raspberry, strawberry, and blackcurrant; the palate is rich and smooth.
Château de Montfaucon, “La Côte”
A tribute to the historic “La Côte du Rhône” terroir, this cuvée comes from vines around 50 years old. It is a multi-varietal blend of Grenache (50%), Cinsault (20%), Carignan (15%), Syrah (10%), and Counoise (5%), planted on sandy soils mixed with limestone scree. The grapes are co-fermented for 14 days before aging for 20 months in concrete vats, preserving the purity of the fruit. The nose unveils notes of red and black fruits, spices, and garrigue, while the juicy, savory palate is supported by fine tannins.
Château de Montfaucon
A pure and fruit-forward expression of the Lirac terroirs, this wine is made from 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault, planted on terraces of rolled pebbles. It is aged for 20 months in concrete vats. The aromatics are centered on red and black fruits with a hint of black pepper. It is the wine’s vibrant energy that captivates, offering great length and delicious appeal.
Château de Montfaucon, “Baron Louis”
This is the estate’s signature red wine. It comes from old vines in our three different Lirac terroirs: Peiguerol, La Roche, and l’Escarce. The blend is composed of 60% Grenache, complemented by Carignan, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The nose opens with generous fruit, with notes of garrigue, a touch of licorice, and a hint of blood orange. On the palate, the wine is intense, delicate, and fresh, supported by fine, smooth tannins.
Baron de Montfaucon
This wine comes from a 1.3-hectare plot in the lieu-dit “Les Escondudes,” adjacent to the renowned La Crau plateau. It is planted with 80-year-old Grenache vines (92%) and a small amount of Mourvèdre (8%) on rolled pebbles and fine clay. This wine is aged for one year in Burgundy barrels. It reveals an ethereal nose of stewed strawberry, cherry, rose, and white pepper. The palate is fresh and luscious, with great finesse.
Baron de Montfaucon, Cuvée Bimard
Sourced from the 3.5 hectares of Clos Bimard in the “Bois de la Ville” sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wine expresses all the uniqueness of a cool, late-ripening terroir. Bordered by woods, the vines of the “Clos” are planted on limestone and galets roulés terraces. The blend consists of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and 20% Cinsault, co-fermented and vinified in concrete tanks, then aged for twelve months in Burgundian barrels. The wine develops aromas of ripe red fruits, notes of peony and spices, a dense texture, and chalky, sapid tannins.
Château de Montfaucon, “vin de Monsieur”
“Le Vin de Monsieur” was born from the discovery of this historical label in our archives. Inspired by the vinification methods of the era, the wine comes from the co-fermentation of multiple Rhône grape varieties (around 16, comprising 90% red and 10% white varieties) sourced from our finest centenarian vines. The wine is aged for one year in Burgundian barrels. Intense, it reveals aromas of pine forest, black fruits, and white pepper.
